Complete Guide: How to Calculate GST in India (Inclusive & Exclusive)

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a unified, destination-based indirect tax levied on the manufacture, sale, and consumption of goods and services throughout India. Introduced on July 1, 2017, GST replaced a convoluted web of legacy central and state levies, including Central Excise Duty, Service Tax, State VAT, Entry Tax, and Luxury Tax.

Whether you are a freelance consultant issuing invoices, a small retailer calculating shelf margins, or a consumer verifying a store receipt, accurately separating the pre-tax base amount from the GST component is an everyday necessity.

UtilityHub's Free GST Calculator makes it effortless to compute forward (exclusive) and reverse (inclusive) tax liabilities across standard Indian slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, and 28%) with automatic CGST, SGST, and IGST breakdowns.

GST Formulas: How Calculations Work

1. GST Exclusive (Adding GST to Base Price)

When quoting a pre-tax product or service price, GST is added on top of the base amount:

GST Amount = (Base Amount × GST Rate %) / 100
Total Invoice Value = Base Amount + GST Amount

Example: If professional consulting fees are ₹10,000 and GST is 18%:

  • GST Amount = (10,000 × 18) / 100 = ₹1,800
  • Total Invoice Payable = 10,000 + 1,800 = ₹11,800

2. GST Inclusive (Extracting GST from Gross Price)

When a retail price or bill amount already includes GST (e.g. MRP tag of ₹11,800), you extract the net pre-tax commercial value using reverse calculation:

Net Base Amount = Total Price / (1 + (GST Rate % / 100))
GST Tax Amount = Total Price – Net Base Amount

Example: For an item sold at ₹11,800 inclusive of 18% GST:

  • Net Base Amount = 11,800 / 1.18 = ₹10,000
  • GST Tax Extracted = 11,800 – 10,000 = ₹1,800

Intra-State vs Inter-State Supply (CGST, SGST, IGST)

Under India's dual GST framework:

  • Intra-State Supply (Buyer and Seller in the Same State): The tax is bifurcated equally between the Union government and the State government:
    • CGST (Central GST): 50% of the total tax rate (e.g. 9% for an 18% slab).
    • SGST (State GST) / UTGST: 50% of the total tax rate (e.g. 9% for an 18% slab).
  • Inter-State Supply (Buyer and Seller in Different States): The entire tax is collected by the Central Government as IGST (Integrated GST) at the full applicable slab rate (e.g. 18%).

What is the difference between GST Inclusive and GST Exclusive?

GST Exclusive means the tax percentage is added on top of the base price. GST Inclusive means the entered amount already contains the GST tax, and the tool extracts the pre-tax base amount and tax portion.

How are CGST and SGST divided?

For intra-state transactions (within the same state), the total GST is split equally: 50% as Central GST (CGST) and 50% as State GST (SGST). For inter-state sales, 100% applies as Integrated GST (IGST).

What are the common GST tax slabs in India?

The 4 primary GST slabs in India are 5% (essential goods), 12% (processed foods/electronics), 18% (most services and manufactured goods), and 28% (luxury items and motor vehicles).
