Every year around January and February, human resource (HR) and finance departments across Indian corporate offices request employees to submit their Year-End Tax Investment Proofs.
For salaried employees who claimed House Rent Allowance (HRA) during initial payroll declarations, valid Rent Receipts are compulsory documentation. If receipts are missing or non-compliant, your employer's finance team will disallow your HRA exemption and deduct heavy Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) from your March paycheck.
In this guide, we outline the statutory rules governing rent receipts and explain how you can generate compliant receipts with our Rent Receipt Generator.
Key Statutory Requirements for Valid Rent Receipts
1. Mandatory Fields Every Receipt Must Have:
- Date of payment and rental period (e.g. April 2026 to March 2027).
- Tenant's full legal name.
- Landlord's full legal name and contact address.
- Complete physical address of the rented residential property.
- Amount of rent paid in figures and words.
- Signature of the landlord.
2. The Landlord PAN Rule (Rent > ₹1,00,000 / Year):
Under CBDT circular guidelines, if your annual rent exceeds ₹1,00,000 per year (equivalent to ₹8,334 per month), you must submit the PAN of your landlord. If your landlord does not possess a PAN, they must provide a signed declaration (Form 60) specifying reasons.
3. When is a ₹1 Revenue Stamp Required?
- Cash Payments: Under the Indian Stamp Act, if rent exceeding ₹5,000 per receipt is paid in Cash, a ₹1 Blue Revenue Stamp must be affixed across which the landlord signs.
- Online / Banking Transfers (NEFT, UPI, Cheque): A revenue stamp is technically not mandatory for digital bank-to-bank transfers, but many corporate HR policies still recommend it for seamless audit verification.
