If you take a photograph of your passport photo, signature, or academic marksheet with an iPhone (iOS 11 and later) and try to upload it directly to an Indian government exam portal, job portal, or college admission form, you almost certainly receive this error:
> "Invalid file format. Only JPG, JPEG, and PNG files are allowed."
When you inspect the file on your phone or Mac, you notice the extension is .HEIC or .HEIF rather than .JPG.
In this article, we explain what HEIC is, why Apple uses it by default, and how you can convert HEIC photos to universal high-quality JPGs using our free HEIC to JPG Converter in seconds.
What is HEIC and Why Does Apple Use It?
HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container, based on the HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG).
Apple adopted HEIC starting with iOS 11 for two primary reasons:
1. 50% Smaller File Sizes: HEIC utilizes modern High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC / H.265) compression. A photo that consumes 6MB in JPEG takes only about 2.5MB to 3MB in HEIC with identical or superior visual fidelity.
2. Rich Color Depth: Standard JPEG supports 8-bit color (16.7 million colors), whereas HEIC supports up to 16-bit color, allowing for richer HDR capture, depth maps, and live photo sequences.
The Problem: Legacy Compatibility in India & Global Portals
While HEIC is technically superior, most web servers, recruitment platforms (SSC, UPSC, NTA, IBPS), and older Windows operating systems do not natively parse HEIC streams. They expect legacy JPEG (JFIF) streams.
| Feature | HEIC (Apple Default) | JPEG / JPG (Universal Standard) |
|---|---|---|
| File Compression | High (Approx 50% smaller) | Standard |
| Portal Compatibility | Low (Rejected by most forms) | 100% Universal Compatibility |
| Color Support | Up to 16-bit HDR | 8-bit Standard |
| Browser Support | Safari (Native), Chrome/Firefox (Requires decoder) | All browsers natively support |
How to Convert HEIC to JPG on UtilityHub
With UtilityHub, you don't need to email photos to yourself or install third-party conversion software:
1. Open the HEIC to JPG Converter on UtilityHub.
2. Drag and drop your .heic files or select them from your iPhone's photo library.
3. Our client-side WebAssembly decoder unpacks the HEVC stream into a raw RGBA canvas buffer right in your browser.
4. The canvas re-encodes the image into an optimized, compliant standard JPEG.
5. Click Download JPG to receive your portal-ready photo.
6. If the resulting file needs to be compressed to 50KB or 20KB for an exam portal, pass it directly to our Compress Image to 50KB tool.
How to Make Your iPhone Save Photos in JPG by Default
If you prefer your iPhone to capture photos in JPG format automatically:
1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
3. Tap Formats.
4. Choose Most Compatible instead of High Efficiency.
(Note: This will use slightly more storage on your iPhone, but all future photos will save directly as JPG).
